  • Nature Story Time

    Nature Story Times are designed primarily for young children and will introduce a different nature-themed book each week. During most of the story times, a puppet, live animal or enrichment items will be included to enhance the experience. These programs should last approximately 30-45 minutes depending on the book covered. Watch this page for information about stories to be offered.

    These programs are included in general admission and free for Heard Museum Members.

  • Teacher Appreciation Day

    Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary will host a Teacher Appreciation Day on February 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Teachers with an official school ID and one guest per teacher will receive free admission on this day. The Heard will offer guided trails, live animal presentations, and Magic Planet-oids. Light refreshments and giveaways for teachers will also be available, while supplies last.     Pre-registration is required and spots are limited. Click here to register

    To check in at the event, participants will be asked to let our check-in volunteers know the name under which they registered and will be asked to present their corresponding official school ID. Teachers interested in bringing additional guests (beyond the teacher and their guest that receives free admission) are welcome to purchase general admission at the door.

  • Second Saturday Bird Walk

    Monthly Bird Walks at the Heard The Heard Museum and Prairie & Timbers Audubon Society (PTAS) offer guided bird walks on the Heard Sanctuary. Walks begin promptly at 8 AM and last 1.5 hours (with optional extended time if some participants are interested). If you come a few minutes late the group may have already started their walk so it is important to be on time. Walks are included in regular admission and free for Heard Museum members. These bird walks are intended to help beginning and intermediate birders with bird spotting and identification techniques. There will also be plenty of opportunity for questions. Prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats are included in these walks.

    Let’s get creative with a little bit of recycled glass to make a one of a kind sculpture for your garden. No experience necessary to participate. All materials are included.

    Your creation will be smaller than the one pictured in the example and will contain different glass types. You will design your own but can use this piece for reference. Each participant’s creation will be unique to the creating artist. All materials will vary because they are sourced from recycled materials. Ages 17+. Closed-toed shoes and long pants required. Participants should bring a packed lunch.

  • Spring Break Mini-Camp

    Each spring break mini-camp explores a different topic and includes indoor activities and time outside exploring our 289 acre sanctuary. Preregistration required. Click here to learn more

    Participants should dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven gravel

    • Time: 9:30 A.M.—12 P.M.
    • Tuition per mini-camp: $18/member*; $22/non-member

    • Kindergarten – 6th grade
    • Flowers are more than pretty. Learn about the importance of flowers to local wildlife including butterflies to birds. Explore the sanctuary to see what flowers are blooming. Make a seed ball to take home and grow your own flower.

  • Nature Story Time

    Nature Story Times are designed primarily for young children and will introduce a different nature-themed book each week. During most of the story times, a puppet, live animal or enrichment items will be included to enhance the experience. These programs should last approximately 30-45 minutes depending on the book covered. Watch this page for information about stories to be offered.

    These programs are included in general admission and free for Heard Museum Members.

  • Zip Line Day

  • Third Saturday Nature Talks

Third Saturday Nature Talks are open to the public and are free with paid general admission or Heard Museum Membership. Many of these programs will have an outside component.
